Is your watch suitable for swimming?

Dust proof, Shockproof, freezeproof, crushproof, Splashproof, rustproof, water resistant, waterproof and most importantly is it fool proof

If any of you are planning to buy a watch or GPS equipment and intended to take it for a swim, make sure it is IPX8 certified or 100m water resistant (refer to table below)

Most Garmin & Polar watch are IPX7 certified. An IPX7 designation means the GPS case can withstand accidental immersion in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes. An IPX8 designation is for continuous underwater use (www.garmin.com)

Most watch such as Nike, Timex, Casio & a few other sport watch are IPX8 certified or water resistant more than 100m.

Olympus camera are IPX8 certified with some NEW model such as the Olympus Stylus Tough-8000 are waterproof, freezeproof and crushproof (www.olympusamerica.com)

Watches are classified by their degree of water resistance, which roughly translated to the following (1metre = 3.2808398950131 feet);

Water resistance ratingSuitabilityRemarks
Water Resistant 30 m or 50 mSuitable for water related work and fishing.NOT suitable for swimming or diving.
Water Resistant 100 mSuitable for recreational surfing, swimming, snorkeling, sailing and water sports.NOT suitable for diving.
Water Resistant 200 mSuitable for professional marine activity and serious surface water sports.NOT suitable for diving.
Diver's 100 mMinimum ISO standard (ISO 6425) for scuba
 diving at depths NO
T requiring helium gas.
Diver's 100 m and 150 m watches are generally old(er) watches.
Diver's 200 m or 300 mSuitable for scuba diving at depths NOT requiring helium gas.Typical ratings for contemporary diver's watches.
Diver's 300+ m for mixed-gas divingSuitable for saturation diving (helium enriched environment).Watches designed for mixed-gas diving will have the DIVER’S WATCH L M FOR MIXED-GAS DIVING additional marking to point this out.

Sunday Morning Ride #2

Today is the 2nd group ride of the year. We were supposed to start riding at 6:30am but I'm the one who set the time 6:30am, I woke up late instead - 6:34am. Luckily all my things are already prepared last night - the bike, the clothes, the drinks, the sandwich -----. Brushed my teeth, change clothes and off I go to my mother's house. Nasib baik rumah hampir (less than 2 mins). We started around 6:47am.

The route is still the same as last week - from sg akar to highway HB and then Tungku Highway, B.Shahbandar (pit stop), Jerudong Park U-turn, Highway Muara and masuk Lambak Kanan. We managed to cover 46.41km in a time of 1:38:52 hours. The ride was like last week with spinning at first then 35km/hr around Tungku Highway. recovery at B.Shahbandar. Easy ride at Jerudong Park all the way to UBD Bridge and then high speed again at 35 to 40. recovery again at Lambak Kanan and then sprint (45 to 58) from Pertama traffic light to Madang traffic light with lastly turning left to Madang for hill climb. phuhhhhhhh.....siokkkkkkkkkkk

After breakfast, all of us lepak at our mother's house and diteruskan dengan aktiviti mencuci basikal since most of our house tidak ada air (rumah bukit) and my mother's house ada air eventhough the water pressure is low.

So masa lepak lepak, we have come up with a few ideas how to improve our team clothing jerseys and long distance ride activities.

  1. Polo Shirt
  2. Custom paint bicycle helmet (cheap helmet to be use only during xpdc)
  3. Running jersey
  4. Socks
  5. Bike ride around Labuan Island
  6. Bike ride from Temburong to BSB via Limbang
  7. Bicycle competition in Malaysia & Singapore 2009/2010. We are targeting the Singapore 100KM MTB 2010.
Some of the projects will be carried out as soon as possible since the Triathlon is coming soon - Polo shirt for our support crews during the competition.

Saturday Speed Run

Today was supposed to be my Loooooonnng distance of no less than 12k but judging from my last tuesday training, I've decided to do my speed run instead. I need to boost my speed  if I want to be fast.

I went to Padang Kebajikan Track & Field and ran 5 laps as a warm up. After that, I did a few stretches just to loosen the muscles.

My speed run consists of 5 x 400m with 4 mins recovery in between. 400 m run in less than 1:30mins. First run I managed to do it 1:23 then 1:25, 1:26, 1:29 and lastly 1:26. Supposed to be there should be only a different of 3 seconds between each run. The first and the last run should be getting faster not the other way run gettting slower.

Next speed run is on Thursday morning. Tomorrow is another bike ride.

Singapore and it's night races

I've noticed that Singapore are making the trend of organizing sporting event in the night. Some of the events they have successfully organize and will organize are:

  1. Singapore Sundown Marathon (84K & 42k) - May 2008
  2. Singapore F1 races - September 2008

Coming Soon !!! - Singapore Mountain Bike Carnival - 28 Feb / 1 Mac 2009
Coming Soon !!! - Singapore Sundown Marathon - 30th May 2009

Last year they did try to organize Singapore night triathlon but somehow the ITU did not sanctioned the night triathlon so they change it to day time but again due to shortage of time, they have to cancel it.

They should try to organize event like:

  1. Night Golfing
  2. Night Swim
  3. Night Duathlon
  4. Any sport which usually done in the daylight, change it in the night with the only light is from the stars and the moon

Tuesday Afternoon Run

Yesterday I had a long run of 12.99km. My run was accompanied by Zaeidi and Rafidi. We started our run from home to stadium using the Sg Akar Highway bypass, make one small loop at the stadium and return home. On the way back we saw Ahmad doing his bike training and I saw him again doing his early morning run today. Hebat hebat !!!

After the Sg Akar roundabout, PD & GD speed off leaving me behind. I tried to follow them but I was already tired and have no more extra energy to speed. I only have the energy just to maintain my current pace. At one corner of the road, where I cannot see them anymore, I stop and walk for 2 mins just to recover from the exhaustion. I should have stop at the stadium and refill my energy with 100+. 12.99km in a time of 1:21:46

Next week, we are planning to practice using the triathlon run route, just to familiarize the up and down of the route and next Sunday (not this coming Sunday), we are planning to try the triathlon bike route.

The Greatest Race On Earth 08/09 - Mumbai

Mumbai Marathon was held on Sunday 18th January 2009 and once again Brunei is represented by one runner sponsored by Standard Chartered Brunei. He is Noor Mohd Ariffin Hj Bahrain and he clocked 04:02:35 for the 42km run. Congratulations and well done.

With that, he is ranked 19th out of 23 runners participating in the Greatest Race on Earth. Overall after 3 races, Brunei is still ranked 19th out of 23. Looking from the results, I can say that Brunei is considered at the bottom because the last 4 countries - Korea, Botswana, Zimbabwe & Pakistan, most of their runners did not run the marathons (DNF/DNS). If the runners do showed up, most probably we would be at the bottom last or at least 2nd last. Check Here

The last race for The Greatest Race on Earth will be in Hongkong, 8th February 2009 and Brunei will be represented by Sefli Ahar.

1st Group Ride of the Year

Today was our first group ride of the year. All six riders showed up. Ahmad was invited for the ride but he had an appointment with PNG for a morning ride at Kota Batu. Today we managed to cover 46.62km in a time of 1hour 39 mins with an average speed of 28km/hr. It was a fast ride and a good workout.

So far this week activities are a bit slow.

Monday: Recovery/Rest
Tuesday: Afternoon swimming lesson
Wednesday: Afternoon bike ride 15.36km
Thursday: rest
Friday: Swimming 3X500m and 2X100m
Saturday: Morning run 7.37km

Sunday: Bike ride 46.62km

Currently Zaeidi, Ahmad and me are taking the lessons. For the swimming lesson on tuesday, it was an exhausting lesson and Johnny was teaching us. Eventhough Pusat Belia swimming pool is small but it is enough to tired us all. If any of you do remember, Johnny was the filipino guy yang ikut the 2nd Brunei Triathlon using a purple mountain bike. Since we requested for Johnny as our coach, the lesson have been change to Wednesday. yeaaahhhh

With Triathlon coming up on 1st March and Ultramarathon on 30th May, therefore I have to do 2 in 1 training. I cannot start my Ultra training after the triathlon because that is already a bit late (like last year). Roughly my schedule for 7 days a week training would look like this

Monday: rest/recovery (of course)
Tuesday: Afternoon 10 to 14km run
Wednesday: Afternoon swimming lesson
Thursday:Morning Speed Run or brick & Afternoon Bike ride

Friday: Morning Run & Afternoon Swimming
Saturday: Morning Looonggg Run
Sunday: Morning Bike Ride

For the Singapore 70.3 Ironman, after checking the competitor list from their website, so far as of today only 548 (out of 1500 slots) athletes have registered and only 4 Brunei competitor have registered. That's means there are still many empty slots. The four competitors are:

Sharif Ibrahim - Bruneian
Keeran Janin - Bruneian
Bernhard Hustedt - Brunei German
Teo Cheng Nee Jacqueline - Singapore Bruneian

3rd Brunei Triathlon Registration are now OPEN

Registration for Brunei Triathlon are now open. The organizer have chosen 1st March 2009 to be the competition date. The location of the race is still the same as the previous triathlon.

Registration are open to male & female holding YELLOW, RED AND GREEN Brunei identity card. Therefore only foreign residents residing in Brunei Darussalam are allowed participate or in other words NO OVERSEAS PARTICIPANTS.
There are 5 categories:
  1. Category A Male Individual 16-29 years
  2. Category B Male Individual 30-39 years
  3. Category C Male Individual 40 years & above
  4. Category D Male Team Event 13 years & Above
  5. Category E Female Team Event 13 years & Above

All top 10 winners of each category will receive CASH prizes and certificate. ALL participants who finishes the event within 3 hours 30 minutes will get prizes and certificate.

The chances of getting top 10 are very much possible because there are not many individuals who are very good at all three sports. But still I would predict that there would be more participation as compared to 2nd Brunei triathlon.

For team events, I would guess there would be more participants joining the team events as compared to individual event. Swimmers, Cyclists & Runners - It will be very hard to find a good swimmers compared to finding a cyclist and a runner.

  • So to any GOOD SWIMMERS out there who are looking for a team mate, I already have a cyclist and a runner. Good Swimmers meant that you are not afraid to swim in the open sea and preferable have experience in open sea swim. Anybody who wants to join the TEAM can email me.

3rd Brunei National Triathlon 2009

I heard from a reliable source that the 3rd Brunei National Triathlon will be held sometime in March either 1st or 15th depending on the low tide.

The location is still the same - Swimming at Serasa then bike 42km to Stadium and then 10 km run to Jalan Kumbang Pasang, SOAS College, Supa Save Mabohai, Kem Kesihatan and stadium.

The good thing about this year prize are that top 10 winners will get prizes with no 1 getting B$2,500. I'm not sure whether age group is still available or just an open category.

Hopefully they will release the registration form as soon as possible so that everyone can start training.

Conquering Mt Kinabalu for the 4th time - Day 1

All 6 of us went to Kota Kinabalu a day earlier so that the next day we will arrive early at Kinabalu Park and also give us plenty of time to do any last minute shopping.

Some of the climbers getting ready for the climb

9:18am - We started the journey by walking downhill

After that it is uphill all the way with lots of stairs

The 1km checkpoint. it tooks us an average of 30mins per km

10:00am - Resting at every checkpoint (every 1 km there is a hut)

The porter carrying heavy goods

After resting, continue with more uphill walking

11:49am - Lunch break at one of the checkpoint

Some of the climbers also took their lunch break at the same checkpoint

Summit Trail - just go up hill

That small white house on the top right hand corner is where we are heading.

My brother are already too tired to walk that he needed to rest every few hundred meters

After 5km, we have walked 3 hours 25 mins and its another 1 km before we reached Laban Rata

More uphill walk

13:42am

Finally we reached Laban Rata resthouse and it took us 4 hours 25 mins just to walk 6km uphill.

Showing off that we can withstand the cold temperature

That BIG mountain is what we gonna climb in the early morning.

Bukit Shahbandar Challenge - The Results

My time was 1:18:44 hours which was 0:00:01 slower than last year. The track was a bit wet and muddy due to heavy rain last night. I started at the back of the group because by the time they flag off my group, aku baru keluar dari toilet. They were supposed to wait 5 mins before the next flag off.

This year event, one of the royal family took part. No wonder banyak press and photographers

Flag off for the veteran category - men & women

Eventhough I started late but I still managed to 'sayur' a lot of people

The rescuers waiting patiently hoping nobody 'pengsan' during their watch

Who is the champion?????

As usual, our national hero - Sefli Ahar
