The event was held today, Sunday 14th June 2009 at Bukit Mentiri. A few of my brothers, nephews and niece did join in the race.
Zaeidi and Baharudin and we are in the same category 18 to 34 years old. I was supposed to be in category 35 to 44 years old but since my age have not reach 35 (in a few months time) so I just follow the youngster categories.
For our category we have to run the red and yellow marker i.e. 2.7km + 1.8km = 4.5km
Sefli – Brunei current no 1 runner and he is winning this run
Zaeidi ‘sayur-ed’ me around 5 mins. He is getting faster and faster and at the right time and the right age – PRIME time to be in the peak of performance whereas for me I was somewhere behind my prime time – slowing down.
The unofficial result. Zaeidi was top 10 and I was somewhere 18th place.

I woke up around 5:30am. Had a quick shower and put on my race gear. I have to wait for Zaeidi to finish his shower and we went out of the hotel around 6:05am. My breakfast was only
Powerbar Triple Threat and a bottle of 100plus. When we arrived at the transition area, not so many people had arrived. I arranged my gear nicely and neatly and at the same time looking around how the other triathlete organise their gear. After everything is done, it’s time for body marking. Luckily it was still early so the queue wasn’t that long.
After that we went back to the hotel – one last ritual. To the toilet (membuang mana mana yang patut).
The sea was calm but from far away we could see there was a black cloud heading to the shore. I guess its going to rain in the middle of the race. We did a few warm up and Zaeidi was still trying to overcome his fear of sea water going into his mouth.
The race started 5 minutes earlier and we decided to start at the back. Let all of them go first, we don’t want to get punch and kick in the face. The swim was a 750m 2 loop swim. I was expecting my swim to be around 50 minutes but instead I managed to do it in 38mins. First loop I did 17 minutes and I was pretty much surprised. Lajunya masa ku.
The Bike
By the time I reached the bike rack, it was almost empty. So I quickly put on my bike shoes, helmet, gloves and my hydration bag. I managed to overtake a few cyclists while on the road. 10 minutes later on I have to stopped because my seat post clamp wasn’t tight enough so the seat post was slowly sinking down to the seat tube. So kana sayur lah.
Zaeidi managed to catch up and overtake me at the first uphill climb (tarmac road) and after that he was nowhere to be seen.
Entering the first off road section – the oil palm plantation. Nobody was in front of me, so I just followed the road with no clear visible Xterra race marking or any race marshals. The deeper I went to the plantation the less tyre marking could be seen but at least there was. So I said to myself I was on the right track. I was not lost. Then I saw around 6 cyclists heading the opposite direction towards me. Is it a U-turn in front or what?? haiyaaaa…..confirm we are lost. we have selected the wrong trail. So as we were heading back to the right path, another cyclist arrived and he said that we were on the right trail. So believing him, we followed like an idiot. He said this is like hashing, just follow the trail. We follow, follow and follow and guess what. We end up where all of us met him. We are going in a circle……….and he didn’t even noticed it. dumb *ss /otak plastik. All of us agreed to head back and trace back the trail. Luckily we find our way out and back on the right track. We add on an additional of 8km (around 45mins)
To me , the off-road trail wasn’t too technical.
I managed to climb all uphill and managed to sayur a few people while climbing up. peanut lah. I guess comparing to this trail with McFarm and Hutan Simpan Berakas. This was much easier. The downhill, susah lagi Hutan Simpan Berakas. The difficult part was when it rain, it becomes muddy causing some of the downhill un ride-able. I managed to fall a few times because it was too slippery and due to my wheels was fully covered with mud. Advisable use a disc brake instead of V-brake. I guess those who are infront, managed to miss the rain during the off road trail, that's why I saw some of their bikes wasn’t that really dirty compared to mine.
The end of the bike ride was the beach trail and it was really challenging. At one point we have to carry our bike down the big stone because there was no way it could be ride-able. One ‘mat salleh’ just throw his bike from the big stone to the beach. No respect and love for the bike. A few hundred meters after the big stone, I was still pedaling my bike along the beach, where I suddenly felt my thigh cramping up. So I increased my cadence but still it didn’t do any good. So I stop, mount off, let go of my bike and fall down like a tree. So there I was lying down the beach, the sea water was hitting me, luckily I wasn’t carried away by the water. I had a cramped on both of my thigh and cannot bent it. It was painful. Those who pass by me didn’t do anything, they just ask me what has happen and head on. I don’t blame them for not helping, they are in a competitive mode not in a helping mode. So after a few minutes, as painful as it gets, I bent my leg one by one and slowly I recovered. I was glad that I can continue the race.
At one time, while I was ‘sunbathing’ at the beach hurting due to the cramping, there was this one Chinese triathlete come up to me instead of asking how I was doing, he was telling me not let my mountain bike to be washed up by the sea water. Its salty and it can damaged my mountain bike (as if I don’t know). ‘bodoh punya orang’. My legs is more important than my bike. I can easily replace my bike but my legs ada jual kadai supermarket kah? lagi sekali….BODOH PUNYA ORANG!!!! Next time if I have a cramped, I just first put my bike somewhere safe, maybe under the tree far away from the salt water and then baru cramp. Lastly…….VERY STUPID REMARKS.
I managed to finished the mountain bike trail in a time of 2:45:10 with an additional of 8km
THE RUN
I started my run with my thigh muscles still hurting. I looked at the time and I still have plenty of time to finished the race. It was a 10km
trail running divided into 2 laps. The first lap was mostly recovery walk and a few run here and there. I was mostly making friends and talking to ease the pain. End of first lap, we have to cross a small stream waist deep and I heard some of the athlete complaint about it. This is Xterra and trail running not road running. I guess those athlete are ‘Freshie’ or ‘Newbie’ to trail running or hashing. This is nothing compared to trail running in Biathlon Bakam Challenge in Miri or hash run.
The last lap, I’ve decided to run and tried to improve my time so that it won’ be that that bad. I’ve managed to finish my run in a time of 1:15:33.
Overall my total time was 4:39:41 (5 hours was
the time limit) even though in the pictures it say 4:43:39. I was happy with my achievement eventhough I was beaten (sayur’ed) by Zaeidi and Zulhassan. You cannot win them all. The biggest improvement was my swimming time. I guess my swimming technique has improved a lot and maybe the sea condition was perfect to score a good swim. For sure I’ll come back again maybe in 2011 or 2012.
Next project is Ironman 70.3 Putrajaya Malaysia to be held on Sunday, 26th July 2009 and I’ve successfully convinced or in Zulhassan dictionary – racun Zaeidi to participate in the event also.
Lesson to be learnt – Help other athlete in need of support either by encouragement, assistant, physically and mentally. So next time if there is an athlete cramping by the side of the road, I will try my best to help. (term and condition apply – if there is a chance of winning or at least a consolation prizes, then sorry I won’t stop)
I love the finisher Tshirt. ‘SURVIVOR’
I've forgot to mention my brother Aliuddin - He did not participate in Xterra as a participant but instead as a Marshal. The best thing was that he was rewarded with a free Xterra Crew Tshirt, A Finisher Medal and an allowance. Untung yooooo......

Our flight to Kuantan, Pahang via Kuala Lumpur was on Friday, 5th June 2009. The flight was at 3pm from Brunei to K.Lumpur. It’s around 2:15pm and we are still queuing to get our boarding pass. The bicycle bag/box says Merida and Giant but the content inside is a GT bike and a KONA bike
We arrived at the KLIA airport around 5:30pm. We took our luggage from the arrival hall and get our boarding pass at the departure hall for our next flight to Kuantan in 10:00pm. Our luggage was not automatically transferred to the next flight because at the Brunei airport, the stewardess forgot to key in.
We arrived at Sultan Ahmad Shah Airport, Kuantan Pahang around 10:45pm. Since it is a small airport, so we have to walk down the runway. The airport taxi here doesn’t have big taxi like the KIA Carnival. They have the Proton Perdana. So we used 2 taxis and we put the box at the back seat of the car. Luckily the box can fit in.
This is our room. We are staying near the race venue. The Hyatt Hotel at Teluk Cempedak. The room can fit in 2 bikes and an additional bed. We also have a balcony to dry our clothes.
Saturday morning, we are heading to the race venue to check out the place. The Bike Boutique was also there selling their merchandise. I didn’t bought anything since I don’t have the extra cash.
The yellow t-shirt guy is Sharom Abdullah. Malaysia top triathlete, duathlete and a very good mountain biker. Overall he got number 6th in the PRO category in a time of 2:39:24, 26 mins behind the leader. We managed to talk with him asking him about the MTB trail. Getting a few pointers from him. Learnt from the PRO.That Zaeidi’s bike being checked. Somehow his rear disc brake is not working so the guys at Bike boutique is checking it. ![]()
Race number collection was at Vistana Hotel by which we have to take a taxi to that hotel. Why just don’t they do it at the race venue. This was 12:52 noon and we have to head back to the race venue to check in our bike because the dateline to check in the bike is at 4:30pm.
2:45pm. We check in our bike. They test the brake and the headset.
The briefing was at Vistana Hotel. Luckily Zulhassan gave us a lift to the hotel. The briefing was supposed to start at 5pm but was delayed to 5:45pm.
The carbo loading dinner started at 7pm and luckily it was on time. Zulhassan & Me were the 1st to carbo load our plate with those yummy yummy food. Sorry no photo, too hungry to take any photo.
We went back to the race venue around 8pm and checking the transition area. There were so many mountain bikes. There are some downhill bikes and some road bike frame converted to a hybrid (MTB tyres and handlebar) but the fork is still the same. They should have not allowed this bike to race. Its dangerous without a suspension.
We went back to the hotel around 8:30pm and I passed out around 9pm. Zaeidi and Aliuddin went to slept around 11pm.
Next post…..RACE DAY
