XC at bukit ambuk tutong

Sunday, 31st January 2010, a few Mountain Bikers from Brunei Muara decided to try the XC trail at Bukit Ambuk. We parked our car at Taman Rekreasi Sg Basong around 7:30am and around 8:00am, with the help from Tutong riders, we explored the trail – the old and the new trail. In attendance around 12 cyclists

The top of the hill. The track is mostly singletrack and compared to Hutan Simpan Berakas, this is much more fun. The trail is mostly on soft ground – not those kind of hard ground at Hutan Simpan Berakas.

There are a few challenging climbs, a few fast downhill, 2 very steep downhill

We finished exploring the trail around 2 hours and we managed to test the new trail 2 times which they called it Bukit Berbaloi – i think so.

Most probably there will be a XC race on the 27th February 2010 – To be confirm.

Overall, the trail is very good, not that too hard. Need to try it out a few more times before deciding whether I should join the XC race or not.

  P1170299-2

This year 2010 starting from January, Brunei has a new cycling coach. His name is Coach Yafiz Jamaludin from Malaysia. Before this he was the state cycling coach for Selangor.

We are very lucky that those not in the program can join in anytime we want either in the morning or afternoon session. Not just the national cyclists but us the weekend cyclists can benefit it also.

P1170297-1P1170299

Usually a short briefing will be held before each ride just to inform the distance, the route and the speed. Sunday ride is usually for longer distance from 100k to 200k. These photos were taken during the 130k and 100k ride. 130k for the elite and 100k for MTB and weekend warriors.

P1170301-1P1170305

Anyone are welcome to join. As long as you can maintain the speed 30k/h to 35k/h, then you should be ‘ALMOST’ ok. What I’ve found out is that their easy ride is around 35km/h and seldom below than that. Sometimes I can keep up with them and sometime I just fall behind. To join in the training you have to be properly rested, hydrated and fully energize (carbo loading).

Keep on riding…………………….

I did 2 group bike ride with group 5:30 stadium and the national team. It was a good learning experience and if I can keep up with the training, gerenti ada improvement.

There no news about Brunei Triathlon. Probably no triathlon this year but a lot of bike race - Road and MTB.

Keep on training.................................

new year labi ride 2010

P1020315

Saturday, 2nd January 2010 – I just had my 2nd bike ride at Labi and the first ride for 2010. This time we went all the way to the end of the road – Rumah Panjang Teraja – 53km from Sg Liang Recreational Park.

Around 20 plus plus cyclists showed up and mostly are from Brunei Muara. Thirteen cyclists (pictured above) and another 5 cyclists (not in the picture) reached the Teraja checkpoint and other cyclists only rode until the Labi shop checkpoint (35km mark)

P1020325 P1020324

It took us almost 2 hours to reached Teraja longhouse and another 2 hours to get back to Sg Liang. If added the resting period, it would be around 4.5 hours.

P1020330 P1020304

The weather was very good at first, not too sunny. But by the time we went back to Sg Liang i.e 11:30am, the sun decided to show itself and switch on the heater.

Since my capabilities is only limited to around 80km, so after reaching the maximum distance, I had cramped on both legs but I know from my own personal experience, it is not a good idea to stop, it is better to carry on. The trick is to switch to heavier cassette – put more effort or harder pedaling (someone taught me). Eventually it will disappear and for sure it will come again. I just carried own pedaling using slightly heavier cassette until I reached Sg Liang – flat land, downhill and uphill all using heavy casette.  NO PAIN NO GAIN. Ada rasa sakit, ku tekan lagi sampainya hilang. Some of you might not agree with me but it works for me.

Seperti kata pepatah melayu – bersakit sakit dahulu, besenang senang kemudian.

P1020331 P1020332

Until next time, we will be back to Labi for another challenge…………………

Note: Need to put more mileage on my cycling. More mileage to built up endurance and stamina.
