good bye 2010. welcome 2011

This year, I’ve done a lot of cycling race compared to running but nothing to be proud of my cycling. The improvements are not much compared to my running.

To improve in cycling, need to invest alot in TIME. Spend more time on the saddle paddling 3 to 5 hours will surely improve the endurance and speed. Spend more on the MONEY will get the best bike gear but not yet guaranteeeeeed to be faster.

To summarize these year 2010 activities

International Events Borneo Marathon
Sundown Singapore Ultramarathon
Kinabalu Climbathon
Miri Triathlon
PBC Duathlon Miri
Local Events (Running) Keriam Half Marathon 21km

Next Year 2011 International activities – Pending For Approval From ‘HOME’ affair

International Events Aviva Ironman 70.3 Singapore (March) - approved
Energizer Night Run, KL (April)
Borneo Marathon (May)
Powerman Malaysia (Nov)
Miri Triathlon (Nov)
Penang Bridge Marathon (Nov)
Ironman Langkawi – unconfirmed event

If the activities need to be scale down, then after AVIVA, it is Powerman Malaysia and Miri Triathlon.

For local events, Iess bicycle, more on running since cycling need a lot of time to train. Honestly saying, bicycle race is very hard compared to running.

First I’m a runner, then a cyclist = Triathlete.

Keep on training…………………………………….

cabaran kuala belait – the story, the pictures and the result

The race was held in Kuala Belait district, 26th December 2010. The race was supposed to be swimming, cycling and running but if the sea condition on that day was not good, the swimming will be change to a run along the beach.

Race day, the weather was good, the condition was good, low tide is taking place and we were expecting for the swim to take place but instead it was a run to the sea until chest high and return back to the sea.

I guess they didn’t request for help from authorities of the seas such as Marine police, fire brigade, sports departments or who ever can provide assistant in the water.

My mountain bike – tires converted to 1.5 touring tires and bottle cage at the back. My pink Nike shoes, swim cap and goggle.

PC260554 PC260559

Body marking done around 7:00am and those white barriers were used as a parking for MTB. Luckily it was a mountain bike, if it was a road bike or triathlon bike, many would have complaint about the racking styles and wouldn’t used it. It would certainly damaged your carbon fork.

PC260561PC260563

7:15am, checking out the seas, low tide is setting in. No floating buoy can be seen. Its going to be a long run to the ocean before we can really swim

The race was supposed to start at 7:30am but due to the late arrival of KB District Officer, the race was delayed to 8:00am

PC260582PC260583

By 7:50am, we were ready at the starting line up and we were waiting for the KB District Officer but by 8:00 am, we were told to wait until 8:15am. Luckily the Sun was still hiding behind the cloud, so it was a bit ‘mendung’

It wasn’t a swim, it was a run to the sea chest high, U-turn at the pole and run back to the beach. It was a very fast run and completed within 2 minutes.

So, it’s going to be a cyclist race and it’s going to be an advantage to few peoples.

PC260585  PC260589

8:17am, I’m on my way to the 30km bike ride. Hj Tukuk have just arrived for his first transition. I was 11th out of the water and at the starting of the bike leg, if my calculation is correct, I’m 5th.

After 800m, Faizal and Luqman comes along and I tried to draft behind them but they were too fast for me. Then after that Syazwi come along and he was also too fast for me. Those 3 are in the Brunei cycling training program. Damn fast !!!!

At around 10km mark, Hj Tukuk comes along and I managed to draft behind him. With that we managed to overtake another 3 more cyclists and they also draft behind us and stayed together as long as everyone can hold. Hj Tukuk managed to break away from us and 1 cyclist followed him. The 3 of us just let him go, I, myself don’t want to chase him. It was a good attack from him. He stayed drafting way at the back, recovering and at the right moment when some of us are already tired, launched the attack.

PC260600PC260602

9:07am, Zulkifle Liman and Faizal arriving at T2 and Shazwi arriving 9:11am in 4th place

PC260603

The three of us arrived almost the same time around 9:16am.

 PC260604 PC260615

The 3km run was a very fast run. At the start of the run, I was 9th and tried very hard to catch the person in front of me which was Hj Tukuk. Around 1km to the finish line, I got a cramped around my thigh, but I just keep on going but carefully not to make the cramped worsen which would force me to slow down or walk.

With this, I have no chance in overtaking Hj Tukuk but eventually I managed to overtake him 200m to finishing line. Either I’m getting faster or he’s just too tired and slowed down. I crossed the finished line in 8th out of 30

PC260616

The full results. My unofficial timing are as follows;

Sea Run: 2:03 mins

Cycling 29.26km: 59:11 mins (ave speed 29.7km/h)

Run 2.44km: 12:12mins (ave pace 5:01m/km)

All of us, the top 10 winners got our prizes. Actually only the first 3 were awarded the prizes but somehow on that day, they increase the number of prize winners.

Congratulation to all, it was a good event…………..

A good way to end the year 2010 with a WIN

Malaysia has 2 night race. The other race is Putrajaya Night Race. For the 2nd edition of the Energizer Night Race, they have change the venue to Sepang International Circuit – THE F1 circuit. You have to run in loops. 5 loops outside the circuit and 1 loop inside the circuit – for 42km category.

My advice if any of Brunei runners want to join the race, take the AirAsia flight on Saturday morning, 9:30am 16th April 2011 arriving at 11:45am and check in at Hotel Tune KLIA-LCCT Airport, run the race at 7:40pm and finish the race and go back to Brunei taking the early flight of 6:45am, Sunday 17th April 2011 and by 9:05am you are already in Brunei and have time to attend a wedding ceremony (IF you have an invitation) or take the last flight at 1:10pm. This arrangement is good for those not working on Saturday. You don’t have to take any leave, just permission to leave the country

The overall costs would be around

Registration Fees for 42km RM75
AirAsia Ticket (as of 21st Dec 2010) BND 142 ~ RM338
Hotel Tune KLIA-LCCT RM117.04
Other Expenses & Transportation ~ RM200
Total Cost RM730 ~BND306

April 2011 is around 4 months time and if you save $100 a month, you are ready to go or better since BONUSes for Government servants and for some private companies are coming soon, keep around BND350 for the above expenses. If you are going in a group, hotel expenses can be divided in halves for 2 person in a room and transportation fees can be shared also.

So, think about it, Singapore Sundown Marathon is expensive and this is cheaper and at the same time you got a free Energizer headlamp when you register for the race.

Keep on running……………….

pbc duathlon miri

The race was held last Saturday, 11th December 2010 at Miri. The race was simple and happy go lucky. Just like Panaga Triathlon. The duathlon race is 1km run, 17km bike and 5km run.

PC110409  The Ultimate prize of the day !!!

PC110202

The three of us join the race and we decided to wear Powerbar T-Shirt. We were the only Bruneians joining the race except maybe for a few expats from Panaga. The race was a handicapped race whereby your starting position will be based on your prediction time of 5km run and 17km bike. My prediction time were 28 mins for 5km run and 31mins for 17km bike. The slowest goes first and elite goes last.

According to our BIB number, Ali will start first then Zaeidi and me. The starting interval is not fix. Some 1 minute, other 3 minutes and even 5 minutes, maybe !!!

 PC110221 PC110248

The race started around 7:15am and Ali started his 1km run around 7:34am and at 7:41am he is on his way for the 17km bike ride.

PC110241  PC110269

7:39am, BIB number 41 (zaeidi), 42 and 43 (ME) were flagged off at the same time, maybe due to our almost same predicted time. It is a 1km run, So I decided to make the pace a bit more faster 4:00min/km. 42 & 43 for the first 200m was side by side while 41 was drafting at the back, trying to follow the pace. Then 42 drop his pace, so 43 took the lead and increase the pace. I guess at one time the pace was 3:30min/km. Everyone was in a single file 43,42 and 41.

After the 2nd last corner, I dropped my pace a little for recovery but everyone is doing the same thing. 100m to the transition point, I increased the pace and reached the line first. 1.18km in 4:50min. (1km in 4:06mins)

PC110271 PC110274

7:44am, after T1, no 42 managed to do a quick transition and he disappeared with his bike and never to be seen. Zaeidi tried to catch him but he was way to fast for him. I think he doesn’t want us to draft behind him just like the run.

PC110283 PC110300

Ali reached T2 at 8:13am and at 8:14am he is doing his 5km run

PC110346PC110373

Zaeidi crossed the finished line at 8:42am and I crossed the line at 8:46 am

 PC110394

Ali crossed the finished line at 8:49am

I finished the race within my predicted time. 17km bike with a time of 32:37 mins (predicted 31mins) and 5km run 27:51mins (predicted 28mins). On the bike leg, 2 cyclists managed to catch me and on my 5km run, I guess around 4 runners managed to catch me. I’ve only managed to overtake maybe 2 or 3 athletes.

By 9:45am, We are already safe back to our hotel. Until next time.

Next year, Powerman Malaysia - November 2011 – 11km run, 64 km bike and 10km run. easy bah !!!
