MUARA 2 BSB RUN - REPORT

The run was done last week 9th October 2011. This was a self organize run with no registration fees, no support, self own transport from start to finish venue and most of all this was just for ‘FUN’.

The reason why I organized this run was not because of the distance ( which was around 28km) but because of the geographical locations. The run was from point A to point B and I’m sure not many have ran from Muara to Bandar Seri Begawan using the old road.

The challenging part is the logistical/ transportation. Since this is a self service run, so it is every runner responsibilities to provide their own transportation at starting and finish area.

photo 1 photo 5

At first my plan was only to run with my team but when a few people shows some interest in the run when I put in my Facebook status, so I created an event for it.

The run was supposed to start at 6:30am but I changed it to 5:45am since a few runners advice me it will be hot if I start at 6:30am.

As expected, nobody showed up except for my team and for me I wasn’t that disappointed of the low turn out. Transportation problem I guess.

We started the run around 5:50am in front of Ayamku Restaurant with 2 support cars full of cold waters, 100+, coke and banana with 5 support crews and finish in front of Ayamku Restaurtant BSB behind Taman SOAS. I should have call it ‘AYAMKU Restaurant RUN’

photo 4 photo 9

The 1st checkpoint was somewhere in Salambigar near the pos office which was 13km from Muara. We managed to maintain the pace around 5:45 to 6:00min/km. Usually at every checkpoint we rest from 5 to 10 minutes and altogether there were 4 checkpoints. Salambigar, Old Tiong Hin, Padang Kebajikan and Jabatan Bandaran.

photo 18 photo 19

The run started to get very hard after Padang Kebajikan checkpoints which was around 21km mark. The longer the rest, the harder to start running again.

We managed to reach the finishing point which was Ayamku Restaurant BSB less than 3:30 with total distance covered around 28km.

 photo 20

Resting behind Taman SOAS. That cooler box is filled with cold water and I put my feet inside to cool it. It was so cold that I can only ‘tahan’ around 10 seconds and pull it out. I did it a few times and it did really help with the quick recovery of my feet and ankle. Next time I wanna try to dip into a waist high cold water to quicken the recovery of my leg.

I’ve participated numerous run in Kota Kinabalu, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Hongkong and the distance ranging from 21km to 84km. I’ve come to realized that I have been participating and competing in other countries running longer distance but not in Brunei.

But the problem here in Brunei, there are seldom long distance events (zero marathon event). The most event would be a 10km run. If I wait for it, it would be a looooong wait, so just create your own ULTRA long run.

Next project would be HuaHo Manggis 2 HuaHo Tutong Ultra Run 50Km +++ and probably I would do it as early as end of November or as late as end of December. That would take around 6 to 8 hours because I’m doing it for ‘FUN’ not for time. Start time would be after Subuh prayer around 5am and 1st water checkpoint would be at Bukit Shahbandar which is 22km mark and after that most probably every 2 or 3km mark.

After that would be KB to Bandar Ultra RUN which is around 140km+++. The plan would be to start on Saturday afternoon after Asar prayer probably around 4pm at KB Clock tower and reached Seria Mosque just in time for Magrib prayer. After that continue on running/walking with lots of checkpoints and expected to reached home at Sg Akar after 15 to 20 hours on the road. AND this is going to happen NEXT YEAR 2012. Still need more planning.

Keep on running………………………………………

UBD CONVO RUN 2011 – RACE REPORT

Pictures were taken from Azlan Murad Ironman and Leong Ab

Sunday, 2nd October 2011, University Brunei Darussalam (UBD). The distance was supposed to be 6.5km but when measured it was 9.10km. A few of the runners did measured the distance and even those with sense of measurement, would know that from UBD Core to Perpindahan Rimba, the distance would be more than 4km and to go back would be more.

Route

We arrived at UBD Core around 6:10am and parked our car at UBD Mosque and to our surprise, there weren’t that many cars around. Either they parked their car somewhere else or there wasn’t that many participated.

group

The run started around 7:30am, delayed around 10 minutes. From the look of it, there were around maybe 100 runners +/-. Since Zaeidi and me are planning to go fast and try to finish the 9km race under 45 minutes, so we started at the front pack.

The race started and it was fast and hard with the first corner hill to the right after 60m. Kilometer 1, my time was 4:23 minutes and the leaders was around 20 seconds in front. Zaeidi was no where to be found. I guess he is somewhere behind me and just before the UBD roundabout, he overtook me and I tried to follow his pace but only managed for a few minutes.

zaeidi

With 9km run, there were around maybe 4 or 5 water checkpoints which was way more than enough.

I’ve passed a lot of runners but only a few runners overtook me. Managed to stay with 5mins/km pace all the way which was very hard. The weather was not that hot and a bit hazy.

me

The run to the finished was a sprint finish with one of the runners. A good way to end the run with an all out sprint. My time was 44:46 minutes with average pace of 4:58 min/km

Had a good run and a good preparation for the upcoming event.

National cyclist Muhammad Raihaan Abd Aziz. Picture: BT file

Saturday, October 1, 2011 - Page B10

Brunei Cyclist Shows
THEY say football pretty much gets everything in Brunei. No other sport receives much recognition and total support such as football, and this is understandable due to the country's historic roots with the world's most popular game.

But clearly not all the best, brightest and most determined athletes play football. Similar to how a manager analyses and deploys team members according to their strengths as well as allocating roles and responsibilities accordingly, any ambitious country in the region should treat its rising athletes accordingly regardless of the sport.

Case in point: national cyclist Muhammad Raihaan Abd Aziz, whose overall time of 15:15:12 during Tour de Brunei 2011 was the best recorded by any Bruneian, finishing 22nd in a field of 64 (Shinichi Fukushima of Terengganu Pro-Asia Cycling, the winner, finished in 15:07:25).

The Tutong native who along with the rest of his peers in the national team is having the time of his life training under coach Yafiz Jamaludin. He learned the fundamentals and technical aspects of competitive cycling for the first time since the Malaysian national was brought in almost two years ago. But now he is facing an uncertain future in his career as a professional cyclist.

"Before this we weren't receiving the kind of guidance that we're getting now," says Muhammad Raihaan, who didn't hesitate to name Yafiz, besides his parents, as the biggest factor in getting him to where he is today.

"He's not selfish when it comes to sharing knowledge. He's good at man-to-man management and I think that's really important. And he really opens the doors to anyone who wants to join, as long as they are serious about it."

"Pretty much he unlocked and tapped my potentials. Now I've built my confidence and self-esteem, thanks to him. I used to find it hard to sleep at night before big races, now I think I can sleep a little better," he says chuckling.

And he still has plenty of years to go before having to call it quits Cadel Evans was 34 when he became the first Australian to win this year's Tour de France, and closer to local shores, Shinichi Fukushima proved age is just a number when he won the Tour de Brunei on the eve of his 40th birthday.

At 23, Muhammad Raihaan caught the eye of more experienced and accomplished riders who raced against him during Tour de Brunei some of whom, according to Yafiz, said it would be a "pity" if Brunei does not send a cycling team to compete in the upcoming Southeast Asian (SEA) games in Palembang and Jakarta this November.

The coach had almost completely lost hope on getting a Bruneian team to Indonesia, but in light of the recent performances of the national cyclists during Brunei's biggest cycling event, his fingers are crossed.

A willingness to dislodge the title of being the best Bruneian cyclist at the moment was illustrated when he asked the reporter if his teammates could join in on the interview, saying, "they're all good cyclists".

Muhd Raihaan let slip a tinge of disappointment in the tone of his voice when asked how he felt about his accomplishments during Tour de Brunei, saying "I was happy, but I wasn't so happy because at the time we were training during Puasa, which wasn't really much training, so I really think we could have done better."

"Because our training was insufficient ... and we were kind of being sidelined for some reason... all the training was done by the coach. For example the Youth and Sports Department didn't provide us with any food we did everything ourselves, getting the food, everything.

"We had a last-minute meeting a few days prior to the race because we were refusing to take part. We didn't have the necessary dietary supplements ... they didn't provide us with anything we were given bicycles to begin with, but what we used for training was what we used during the race itself.

"Even then we had to maintain and repair the bikes ourselves and the spare parts are not cheap. Only after that (the meeting) did they provide us with the necessary supplies," says Muhd Raihaan, acknowledging the need for a cycling team to have its own mechanic, which Brunei doesn't have at the moment.

"Good thing the bicycles were relatively new, otherwise we would've been in a lot of trouble. An old bike would've broken down in no time."

On the bright side, Muhd Raihaan nevertheless was happy with his results, saying there are always lessons to be learnt. "In any race its important to always be in the front, with the leading pack, and not at the back. If you're at the back there's some danger to it, if there's an accident at the front the ones at the back will pay."

No self-respecting man would readily admit that he is self-made, and Muhd Raihaan certainly gives the impression that he isn't. "I work as a clerk at the Department of Mosque Affairs. Without my boss's understanding and support, I wouldn't be here where I am today. He allowed me to pursue my sports passion.

"My dad was an influential figure as well. He bought me my first bicycle. I remember when living in our old flat in Tutong, I was then five, and he took off the supporting wheels. That was the first time I rode a bike properly."

2nd Brunei Tasek Climbathon – Race Report

Pictures were taken from ainee hayat and Wani Ham

The climbathon was held last Sunday, 25th September 2011. The registration was overwhelming since it was a FREE registration. You just need to buy the event t-shirt and the finisher medal. The climbathon was held for charity.

The 1st Tasek Climbathon which was held in 2008 (My report), I did not join and luckily I didn’t.

The race was schedule to start at 7:00am and since the venue is just 8km from my home, so I decided to run from my home at 5:30am to the race venue. A warm up run. I reached there around 6:20am and went straight to the starting/registration area. My brother is waiting for me over there with my bag. There were a lot of people and I can see that there were still many runners trying to get their bib numbers. The organizer have run out of bib numbers 2 days before the event and to those who have registered late, have just to settle for hand written numbers on a piece of paper.

We deposited our bag at the deposit bag counter near the finishing line. They took note of our bib number and write it on a bag tag which was tied to the bag. A very good work.

The warm up aerobics was held somewhere at the finishing line ( The finishing and starting line are at two different locations) and most runners are not bothered with it. They just stayed at the starting line doing their own warm up.

The race started 11 minutes LATE. This was maybe due to transition from aerobic to the starting line took a long time. The race started very fast with the elite trying to get in front so that when the route entering the single track section, it will be very difficult to overtake. I was somewhere mid-front pack. Traffic jam occurs on the first hill. I guess some of the runners are 2WD not 4WD off road hill climbers, so many get stuck here.

map final

If according to the race map, there should be 2 water checkpoint and the route after Bukit Sarang Helang, should be using the new route (to the left), not using the old route(to the right).

There was NO water checkpoint along the race route !!!!!! So I felt sorry for the runners who did not carry/bring water. The only water given was at the registration counter. I think the organizer did not have the manpower to carry the water to the top of the hills. I did carry my own water since I don’t fully believe they can deliver it.

I finished the race in 51.10 minutes and the recorded distance on my Garmin GPS was 5.10km. Zaeidi did a faster time of 44 minutes.

The waiting around was a bit longer. The prize presentation was supposed to start at 9:00am but it got a bit delayed maybe because of other runners still in the jungle or waiting for the VIP to come or the results are not ready yet.

Most runners were hoping to get their certificates that day but were told, it was not ready yet. They could have prepared it early for those who have registered early. Take for example SCB and BIBD charity event. Certificates are ready to be collected once the participants finishes the race/event.

group me

The event management are improving compared to their 1st Brunei Tasek Climbathon but for me they are not going to get 5 STARs. They could have done it better from their previous mistakes. The dark cloud of ‘Brunei Marathon JINX’ is slowly sticking to them. Hopefully next year or whatever year, a more better improved event.

Personally, I did have fun and had a good run and definitely I will participate again because I love to RUN.

Keep on improving………………………FASTER !!!!
